There is a particular moment in early spring when the garden seems to arrive all at once. Buds appear where bare branches stood only weeks before, the first green shoots push confidently through the soil, and the whole landscape begins to feel as though it has quietly woken from its winter sleep.

From a distance, it can look effortless. As though nature simply decided that it was time.

But anyone who has spent even a little time tending a garden knows that spring is not a sudden miracle. It is the result of many small tasks carried out long before the first flowers arrive. Quiet work done in cold air and muddy boots, often with little immediate reward.

These are, if we are honest, the boring jobs. The ones that rarely appear in glossy garden photographs but without which the beautiful spring simply wouldn’t exist.

In many ways, they are the most important work of all.
